BRIEF
Create a centralized place where users could browse recipes, videos, register for cooking classes, view blog articles, and learn more about the non-profit and donate.
01 Research and Discovery
Healthy Families Healthy Futures lacked an extensive network that could broaden the scope of their mission. They did not have a centralized location to post their organization's content, or acquire sponsors. Most of their resources were scattered across different platforms and not labeled or organized properly, making it difficult for users to find specific recipes or acquire particular information.
During our primary research, we found that mothers were the primary people cooking for families, but often reported a lack of time and resources to make sure their kids have healthy meals (Who’s cooking? Trends in US home food preparation by gender, education, and race/ethnicity from 2003 to 2016, Nutrition Journal.)
Thus, easy navigation and time efficiency was a main feature we wanted to focus on. We drafted up a user flow to cover the main functions users would go through, and to ensure that the functions we had in mind aligned with the stakeholders.
The nonprofit’s target audience was people who are food insecure, do not have access to good food, live in an area far from a grocery store, are unable to afford healthy meals, or are on government assistance for food. These users want to be able to make healthy meals for their families, but are limited by the ingredients available to them as well as time and cost. Based on the primary research we conducted and users who have interacted with the nonprofit, we made proto personas.
02 Scope and Constraints
The website was to be completed in 2 semesters, with Spring 2021 focusing on the website with the following components: searchable database of recipes, blog, videos, photo gallery, cooking class registration, and donations. Fall 2021 was projected to revolve around cooking class requests and further tweaking registration.
The product was mostly content-driven, and our design had to be driven by content that the client provided for us (i.e. we cannot add a calories filter to recipe filters if that information is not given). There were a lot of requested features to finish in a limited amount of time, and the client also wanted a mobile view for the website. The required features needed were:
easy way to View & Search Recipes
be able to sign up for Classes and Events
way to make Donations
description of what HF-HF is and what they do
way to connect with the organization on social media receive newsletter updates
